Colombia has launched a new renewable energy initiative through state-owned generator Gecelca, establishing a dedicated subsidiary named Gecelca Solar to accelerate the country’s shift toward clean power generation.

Under the initiative, Gecelca Solar will oversee an initial solar development portfolio of 650 MW, marking one of the largest single commitments to solar power in Colombia to date. The company confirmed that the first project under the new subsidiary will be a 200 MW solar plant located along the Caribbean coast. Once operational, the project is expected to provide power to more than 150,000 households, addressing energy access challenges and reducing electricity costs in the region.

The launch is part of Colombia’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil-fuel-based electricity and expand renewable energy adoption. The initiative also aligns with Gecelca’s long-term plan to diversify its historically thermal-based power generation mix.

The announcement comes amid growing activity in Colombia’s solar sector, including a 130 MW project recently awarded to Scatec under a 15-year power purchase agreement, as well as additional solar developments supported by international financing partners such as EIB Global and Enel Colombia.

Government officials stated that the new subsidiary will play a key role in strengthening energy security, promoting decarbonisation, and improving power affordability across vulnerable regions.
