Global South Utilities (GSU), an Abu Dhabi-based investment firm, has officially inaugurated a 5 MWp solar photovoltaic power plant in Berbera, a key port city in Somaliland. The project forms part of the city’s “Green Berbera Vision,” a long-term plan to shift from diesel-based electricity generation to a cleaner system powered by solar energy and battery storage. With this development, Berbera is positioning itself as a model for renewable energy transition in the Horn of Africa.

The new solar plant is supported by more than 11 kilometers of transmission lines and dedicated substations to ensure efficient power delivery across the city. It is expected to produce around 10,000 MWh of clean electricity annually. This output is sufficient to supply power to nearly 28,000 households. In addition to residential consumers, the project will improve grid reliability for local businesses, public services, and industrial operations, creating a more stable energy environment.

A major goal of the initiative is to support Somaliland’s national energy strategy, which aims to cut dependence on imported diesel. Diesel generation has been expensive and environmentally harmful. By replacing it with solar power, the new plant is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 6,890 metric tonnes each year. The move will not only lower pollution levels but also improve energy security by using locally available renewable resources.

GSU holds a 45 percent stake in Berbera Electricity Company (BEC) and is working with local stakeholders to implement the transition. The long-term strategy is to make solar energy the primary source of electricity during daytime hours, while battery energy storage systems will help maintain grid stability and manage demand fluctuations. The city’s utility currently manages over 20 MW of solar capacity, with plans to double renewable generation by 2027.

Company leaders stated that the project is not only an environmental milestone but also an economic step forward. As a major trade hub, Berbera depends on reliable and affordable electricity to support port operations and logistics services. By modernizing its power infrastructure, the city aims to strengthen its regional competitiveness and support sustainable economic growth.
