Calibrant Energy has signed a definitive agreement to build, own and operate a 23 MWh on-site battery energy storage system (BESS) at Iron Mountain’s data centre in New Jersey.

The battery storage project will be integrated with the facility’s existing 7.2 MW rooftop solar installation, creating a hybrid on-site energy system designed to support Iron Mountain’s 24/7 carbon-free energy commitment while enhancing operational resilience.

According to Calibrant Energy, the system will utilise advanced real-time controls to convert the data centre’s energy load into a flexible grid asset capable of stabilising the regional electricity network during peak demand periods. The approach is expected to maintain uptime for customers while reducing reliance on additional carbon-intensive power infrastructure in the surrounding community.

Phil Martin, Chief Executive Officer of Calibrant Energy, said the project demonstrates how large energy users can manage growth, control costs and contribute positively to grid stability.

Chris Pennington, Senior Director of Energy and Sustainability at Iron Mountain, described battery storage as a key component of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen the local energy ecosystem. He noted that flexible, on-site assets improve grid efficiency and reliability while addressing emerging challenges facing the data centre industry.

The project underscores the growing role of integrated solar and storage systems in supporting energy-intensive facilities and advancing decarbonisation goals in the United States.
