Energy Dome to build 23 MW/200 MWh carbon battery in Ireland

From ESS News

Italian carbon battery developer Energy Dome and Google are extending their previously announced partnership to develop renewable energy storage infrastructure in Ireland. The two companies have signed a commercial contract together for a 23 MW/200 MWh BESS based on Energy Dome’s proprietary carbon technology.

The technology works by using grid power to compress and store carbon until power is needed. When the power is needed, the system expands the carbon through a turbine to generate energy that is sent back to the grid. Crucially, the technology doesn’t rely on lithium or other minerals that are difficult to source due to supply chain constraints. It is also capable of long duration storage, providing more flexibility to the grid.

The Irish project has secured land, planning consent, and a grid connection and has been awarded a 10-year capacity contract by transmission system operator Eirgrid. It is expected to come online in 2028.

The facility will be in County Offaly, Ireland, near high-voltage lines serving the Greater Dublin area. It will also be close to the Rhode Green Energy Park, a cluster of solar and wind generation and it will be built on a former peat-fired thermal plant site.

It will be owned and operated by Energy Dome and the developer plans to eventually develop a second 200 MWh unit at the same site.

Energy Dome CEO Claudio Spadacini said the Irish project will set a precedent for more carbon battery projects in Europe and worldwide as part of its partnership with Google.

“We are proud to work with Google on a project that strengthens grid resilience and unlocks the path to 24/7 carbon-free energy in Ireland,” said Spadacini. “This project is the first commercial bilateral deployment under the strategic partnership between our companies, which aims to develop CO2 battery projects across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.”

Google originally partnered with Energy Dome, which is headquartered in Milan, Italy, in July 2025.

The Irish project news follows another similar announcement in June by Google and Energy Dome to build a 19 MW/200 MWh carbon battery in Arizona. The battery will be located at local utility Salt River Project’s (SRP) Colorado Generating Station, and is being backed by a cost-sharing agreement with Google focusing on long duration energy storage.

Like the Irish project, the Arizona battery is to be built on a former fossil fuel plant.

“At Google, we are committed to catalyzing next-generation energy technologies to bolster grid resilience and introduce critical storage capacity to the system,” said Vanessa Hartley, head of Google Ireland. “This milestone is a next step in our long-term partnership with Energy Dome, and will help scale their promising long-duration energy storage technology, charging ahead to an affordable, secure and clean energy future.”
