SMA Altenso (Altenso) has commissioned a 24.5 MW/64 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for RheinEnergie AG in Einbeck, Lower Saxony, strengthening grid stability and supporting the integration of renewable energy into Germany’s electricity network.
The utility-scale battery storage project is strategically located in a region that plays a critical role in Germany’s north-to-south power flow, where high volumes of wind energy generated in northern Germany are transmitted to major demand centers in the south. By storing surplus renewable electricity and dispatching it when required, the system is designed to reduce grid congestion, minimize renewable energy curtailment, and improve overall grid efficiency.
The battery storage system has a usable capacity of 24.5 MW/64 MWh and is capable of providing a range of grid services, including primary control reserve (PCR) and secondary control reserve (SCR) for frequency regulation and grid stabilization. In addition, the asset will participate in day-ahead and intraday electricity markets while also supplying reactive power to support voltage stability when required.
The project is built using SMA’s inverter and control technology and includes eight medium-voltage power stations (MVPS) equipped with SMA Sunny Central Storage UP inverters and 16 battery containers. According to the company, the system is designed to deliver high operational reliability, efficiency, and compliance with applicable cybersecurity standards.
Altenso served as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the Battery Park Einbeck project, overseeing planning, engineering, construction, and implementation of the medium-voltage grid connection, including switchgear and associated cable infrastructure. The company will also continue supporting the project through long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) services.
Commenting on the project, Benjamin Gevelhoff, Head of Corporate Projects at Altenso, said the successful commissioning demonstrates the company’s capability to independently deliver utility-scale battery storage projects from concept through commercial operation and highlighted the close collaboration with RheinEnergie throughout the project.
Stephan Segbers, Member of the Executive Board of RheinEnergie, described battery energy storage systems as a strategic growth area for the company, enabling the expansion of scalable energy services across Germany. He added that the Einbeck project strengthens RheinEnergie’s presence in flexibility markets, with commercial optimization of the asset being managed by its energy trading subsidiary, RheinEnergie Trading.
According to the companies, the Battery Park Einbeck project enhances regional energy security while facilitating greater integration of renewable energy into the grid. By combining market participation, ancillary grid services, and active grid support, the facility is expected to play an important role in advancing Germany’s transition toward a more flexible and renewable electricity system.
