Home energy storage company Haven Energy has launched its residential battery service in Massachusetts, promising Bay State homeowners their state’s lowest-cost option for reliable backup power.

The Los Angeles-based company’s products will first be available in Barnstable, Bristol, Norfolk, and Plymouth counties, the firm says, with plans to add more in the future. Representatives from the company say that homeowners will be able to enroll in a 10-year fixed cost monthly plan, with rates starting at $29 per month.

“The future of the electric grid is distributed and every home should be a part of it,” says Vinnie Campo, co-founder and CEO of Haven Energy. “Reliable backup power is not something that has to be available only to the few who can afford a major upfront investment in a home battery.

“We have created a way to make backup power an affordable monthly subscription, and we achieved this by working with utilities to keep costs low and while helping them to stabilize the grid, proving those goals are ultimately aligned.”

The launch is supported by Massachusetts’ ConnectedSolutions and ConnectedSolutions+ programs, officials say, which will enable additional energy rebates for participants. The program’s standard system includes a 15 kWh FranklinWH battery, which Haven Energy says can provide enough power to keep essential electronics going “for hours” during an outage.

Installing a proven model

Haven Energy officials say that battery units typically retail at about $10,000, with installation adding potentially adding another $18,000 on top of that. The company says that in contrast, its monthly payment includes installation, monitoring, maintenance, warranty coverage, and ongoing management of a customer’s battery system.

The backup power systems’ benefits will also extend beyond individual participating homes themselves, the company says. Each battery added to the grid will be able to increase local capacity and keep the grid healthy for entire communities.

“At all times, a portion of the battery’s energy remains reserved for the home and during severe weather and power outages, the battery is dedicated exclusively to powering the home,” the company says. “Haven manages enrollment in both programs and incorporates available incentives directly into its pricing, making reliable backup power easy and more affordable.”

The firm enters Massachusetts sporting a proven model for affordable home battery backup. Since its 2022 launch on the West Coast, Haven Energy has built more than 10 MW worth of installed battery capacity, and has an additional 50 MW of capacity in development.

Now, the company is “building for the long term” in Massachusetts, and plans to expand its coverage throughout the Northeast. The goal, the firm says, is to eventually create one of the region’s largest virtual power plants.
