Korean industrial engineering and green energy company Shinsung E&G has launched a new solar module production line in South Korea.
The Gimje plant, located in the southwestern province of Jeollabuk-do, is intended to serve as a core production base for the broader Saemangeum development area.
A spokesperson for the company told pv magazine the modules produced by the production line use n-type cell technology. The new line has a production capacity of 350 MW, the spokesperson added, while the Gimje factory’s total capacity stands at 600 MW.
“We currently have no plans for further expansion, but if domestic market demand grows in the future, we plan to respond by bringing the remaining line into operation,” the company said.
Shinsung’s CEO, Lee Ji-sun, adds that the facility is the company’s only solar module manufacturing base in the Jeollabuk-do region and will establish the area as a “genuine hub for high-power module production.”
The production line is set to supply high-power modules to a number of project contracts Shinsung has secured in the region, including an 80 MW ground-mounted project, another 74 MW project and a 300 MW floating solar project in the Saemangeum development area.
Shinsung established the Gimje plant under an investment agreement with the city and says it has since worked on local job creation and industrial development in the area.
Shinsung’s spokesperson also told pv magazine the company is operating two additional factories alongside its new Gimje plant.
“The Yongin factory, in Gyeonggi-do, uses renewable energy and an energy storage system to meet its power needs. It produces cleanroom products including fan filter units and can produce up to 650 a day at maximum capacity,” the spokesperson explained. “Meanwhile, our Jeungpyeong factory in Chungcheongbuk-do produces air conditioning equipment.”
Last November, a 47.2 MW floating PV project, featuring modules provided by Shinshung E&G, was switched on in South Korea. At the time, the project was billed as the country’s largest floating solar array located alongside a multi-purpose dam.
