The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a US$207 million loan to Enerjisa Enerji to support the modernization and expansion of electricity distribution networks in Türkiye.

The financing will be used across Enerjisa Enerji’s Baskent, Ayedas and Toroslar distribution regions. Together, these networks serve around a quarter of Türkiye’s population, making the investment important for improving the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply as the country’s energy system continues to develop.

Türkiye is accelerating its energy transition while increasing the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix. As electricity demand rises and more renewable power is connected to the grid, stronger distribution infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. The EBRD-supported investment is expected to help Enerjisa Enerji expand network capacity and improve the quality and reliability of electricity services.

The project will also support Türkiye’s green transition by reducing electricity distribution losses. Lower losses can lead to energy savings and contribute to reduced carbon emissions. In addition, technical cooperation will help strengthen Enerjisa Enerji’s operational resilience and address emerging risks linked to the increasing digitalisation of electricity networks.

The financing benefits from a financial guarantee under the European Union’s European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+) Hi-Bar Programme. According to the EBRD, the transaction is the first electricity distribution project supported under the EFSD+ Hi-Bar Guarantee Programme and the first EFSD+-backed Sustainable Infrastructure Group project signed in Türkiye.

EBRD Director of Energy Eurasia Sule Kilic said that strengthening electricity networks is becoming increasingly important as Türkiye advances its energy transition. The bank’s partnership with Enerjisa Enerji is intended to support network modernisation, increase capacity and improve services for millions of consumers.

Enerjisa Enerji Chief Financial Officer Philipp Ulbrich said the financing supports the company’s strategy of securing long-term and diversified funding. He added that cooperation with the EBRD and the European Union will help the company continue investing in Türkiye’s energy transition while maintaining financial stability.

The project also includes efforts to strengthen gender inclusion within the energy sector. Enerjisa Enerji plans to continue policies aimed at increasing employment opportunities in the traditionally male-dominated industry, while exploring additional support for employees with caregiving responsibilities.

The investment further strengthens the EBRD’s involvement in Türkiye. The bank has invested more than €25 billion in the country to date, with most of its investments directed toward the private sector.
