GridLiance West, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Transmission, has commenced construction of its Core Upgrades Project in Nevada, involving approximately 155 miles of new 230-kilovolt and 500-kilovolt transmission lines along with new and upgraded substations.

The project is aimed at strengthening the reliability of Nevada’s electric grid, expanding transmission capacity and supporting the state’s continued economic growth.

The upgraded transmission network is expected to replace existing infrastructure while increasing the grid’s ability to accommodate additional energy resources. Once completed, the project is expected to provide greater access to electricity resources and support new industrial investment across the state.

Construction of the GridLiance West Core Upgrades Project is scheduled for completion in mid-2028. The project is expected to create approximately 500 construction jobs and generate an estimated $90 million in property and sales tax revenue. It is also projected to contribute approximately $553 million in annual economic impact.

According to NextEra Energy Transmission President Matt Valle, the project represents a significant investment in Nevada’s energy infrastructure and highlights the role of transmission networks in supporting reliable and affordable electricity for homes, businesses and industries.

The project is also expected to increase Nevada’s transmission capacity by 1 GW, according to Katie Jereza, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity. The additional capacity is expected to improve access to reliable and affordable electricity across the state.

Valley Electric Association CEO Robby Hamlin said the collaboration with GridLiance West will provide the cooperative with access to additional transmission investment, expertise and resources while supporting system reliability, resilience and the region’s growing energy requirements.

The project is being developed through collaboration among industry, federal and state authorities, tribes and local communities. Its expanded transmission infrastructure is expected to support economic development while generating additional revenue for local communities and public services.
