Swedish marine energy developer Minesto has been selected to join the Sweden-Indonesia Sustainability Partnership, a government-backed initiative aimed at promoting renewable energy solutions in international markets. The selection is expected to support the company’s efforts to explore Indonesia’s tidal energy market, which has an estimated potential of around 60 gigawatts (GW).
The partnership is facilitated in collaboration with Business Sweden and aims to strengthen cooperation between Sweden and Indonesia in sustainable development and clean energy. Through this initiative, Minesto will gain support in exploring new business opportunities, building local partnerships and advancing its marine energy technology in the Southeast Asian market.
For Minesto, entering Indonesia represents an important step in expanding its international presence and accelerating the commercial development of its technology. The company develops marine power plants that use ocean and tidal currents to generate electricity. Its patented technology, commonly known as tidal kites, is designed to produce power from relatively low-velocity underwater currents.
Indonesia’s extensive coastline and marine resources offer significant opportunities for tidal energy development. The country’s estimated 60 GW tidal energy potential could provide a substantial resource for diversifying its electricity generation mix and supporting its broader renewable energy ambitions. However, converting this potential into commercially viable projects will require technological development, investment and supportive regulatory frameworks.
The government-backed partnership is expected to help Minesto address some of the challenges associated with entering a new market. These include understanding local regulations, obtaining the necessary permits, identifying suitable project locations and establishing relationships with regional stakeholders. Access to local networks and potential financing opportunities could also help the company assess project feasibility and develop a pipeline of future opportunities.
The initiative may provide Minesto with a structured platform to engage with Indonesian authorities, potential customers and other industry participants. Such cooperation can be particularly important for emerging marine energy technologies, which often require significant early-stage planning and coordination before commercial deployment.
The selection also supports Minesto’s broader strategy to expand beyond its existing European activities and establish its technology in additional international markets. Indonesia could become an important market for the company if its tidal energy solutions can be successfully adapted to local conditions.
However, the partnership does not itself confirm project awards or commercial installations. Future progress will depend on identifying viable sites, securing project agreements, arranging financing and establishing clear deployment timelines.
Minesto’s participation in the initiative marks a step towards exploring Indonesia’s tidal energy opportunities, while commercial success will depend on translating government-supported cooperation into concrete projects and long-term business prospects.
