The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has formalized a landmark partnership aimed at reshaping the country’s renewable energy sector. On Monday, ECN Director General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, alongside the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with key stakeholders and inaugurated the National Committee on Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, Innovation & Certification (NCREEIC) at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

The NCREEIC will serve as a central platform to accelerate Nigeria’s clean energy agenda. Its mandate rests on four core pillars: advancing innovation and research in renewable energy solutions including solar, wind, hydro, and bioenergy; fostering collaboration among government agencies, the private sector, academia, and international partners; promoting local content to strengthen homegrown industries; and establishing globally recognized standards and certifications for renewable energy technologies.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Abdullahi emphasized that the initiative represents a decisive step toward ensuring clean, affordable, and reliable energy for Nigerians. He noted that the committee’s work will also stimulate job creation, drive industrial growth, and support environmental sustainability.

Minister Nnaji added that the NCREEIC underscores Nigeria’s position as a leader in renewable energy innovation and certification in the region. He stressed the importance of aligning the initiative with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places strong focus on green energy development.

The ECN highlighted that ongoing projects, including the national solarization programme and the Clean Cooking Gas Initiative, will complement the work of the committee in fostering sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.

“This is a transformative journey toward a greener and more resilient Nigeria,” the ECN said in a statement, expressing appreciation to all stakeholders backing the initiative.
