The Adani Group has announced its strategic entry into the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) sector with a massive 1,126 MW / 3,530 MWh installation — one of the world’s largest single-location projects of its kind. The BESS initiative, located at the Khavda renewable energy complex in Gujarat, is set for commissioning by March 2026. Once operational, it will not only be India’s largest energy storage system but also a key global benchmark in clean energy infrastructure.

The project involves over 700 battery storage containers and will employ advanced lithium-ion battery technology integrated with sophisticated energy management systems. Its purpose is to strengthen India’s grid stability, reduce transmission bottlenecks, and ensure the availability of round-the-clock clean electricity. The BESS will allow stored renewable energy to be deployed during high-demand hours, effectively extending power capacity for about three hours.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, emphasized the transformative nature of this venture, calling energy storage “the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future.” He noted that this milestone reinforces Adani’s commitment to India’s energy independence, sustainable growth, and affordability in clean power solutions.

Building on the Khavda flagship, Adani Group has outlined ambitious expansion plans. It aims to add 15 GWh of storage capacity by FY27 and scale up to 50 GWh within the next five years. This roadmap highlights the Group’s intent to build a robust energy ecosystem aligned with India’s net-zero commitments.

The BESS project marks a pivotal leap in India’s energy transition, positioning the Adani Group alongside global leaders investing in large-scale energy storage. As part of its diversified portfolio across energy, logistics, and materials, the Group continues to advance its philosophy of “Nation Building” and “Growth with Goodness,” driving innovation for a low-carbon, sustainable future.
