Balesin Island in Polillo, Quezon, is set to benefit from a stable and sustainable power supply following the inauguration of a solar-battery hybrid system developed by Aboitiz Upgrade Solar Inc., a joint venture between Aboitiz Power Distributed Renewables Inc. (APx) and Upgrade Energy Philippines (UGEP).

The facility, launched on Friday, combines 4.128 MWdc / 2.880 MWac of solar capacity with 2.750 MW / 5.504 MWh of battery storage, ensuring continuous electricity even during nighttime and cloudy conditions.

Meeting Island Power Needs

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, who led the inauguration, said the project highlights how island resorts and remote tourist destinations can achieve clean, reliable, and affordable energy.

Balesin Island currently consumes about 700 MWh of electricity each month. The hybrid facility is expected to meet 60 percent of this demand, reducing reliance on diesel and providing uninterrupted service for residents, businesses, and tourists.

A Model for Off-Grid Communities

The Department of Energy (DOE) said in a statement that the project proves renewable energy, when paired with advanced technologies, can be both technically feasible and economically viable.

By integrating solar generation with battery storage, the system stabilizes power supply and makes renewable energy practical for off-grid communities with variable demand patterns.

The Balesin hybrid project is now being positioned as a model for other island communities, reinforcing the Philippines’ broader push toward renewable energy and sustainable development.
