Australia’s Cheaper Home Batteries program has supported the installation of batteries at 200,000 households, small businesses and community organisations, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean energy transition, the Albanese Government said.

Of these, 50,000 households have installed rooftop solar for the first time, indicating growing uptake of distributed renewable energy solutions across the country.

Battery installations under the scheme are occurring at record rates nationwide, with particularly strong uptake in outer suburban and regional electorates, including Wright in Queensland, Indi in Victoria and Page in New South Wales.

Since the program’s launch, approximately 4.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery storage capacity has been installed, effectively doubling Australia’s total battery capacity. Following an expansion of the scheme in December, the government expects the number of home batteries installed to rise to two million by 2030.

The additional storage capacity is enabling households to store more of their locally generated solar power for use at night and during periods of high electricity demand. This has been particularly important during the summer months, helping power air-conditioning while supporting grid stability during peak demand.

Australia is already a global leader in rooftop solar adoption, and the expansion of home battery storage is allowing households to maximise the value of the energy they generate.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said the milestone reflects growing public confidence in renewable energy as coal-fired power becomes increasingly costly and unreliable.

“Two hundred thousand cheaper home batteries means more Australians are taking control of their power bills and using their own clean, affordable energy when they need it,” Bowen said.

He added that the program is delivering long-term cost-of-living relief for households while contributing to a fairer and more reliable electricity grid.
