Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) hosted a high-level meeting with Azerishiq, Azerbaijan’s electrical grid operator, to explore bilateral cooperation in sustainable energy, smart grid technologies, and innovation. The meeting was held between HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, and Vugar Ahmadov, Chairman & CEO of Azerishiq, in Dubai.

Senior DEWA executives including Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence; Dr Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources; and Marwan Bin Haidar, Executive Vice President of Innovation and the Future, were also present.

Discussions centered on enhancing joint efforts in energy innovation, sustainability, and technology deployment. Both parties underscored the importance of leveraging advanced technologies and shared expertise to strengthen grid resilience and accelerate the transition to green energy.

Al Tayer highlighted Dubai’s ambitious clean energy vision under the UAE Net Zero Strategy 2050, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. These initiatives aim to source 100% of Dubai’s energy needs from clean sources by mid-century. He also showcased DEWA’s flagship project — the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park — which is expected to reach a production capacity of 7,260 megawatts by 2030, using both photovoltaic and concentrated solar power technologies.

DEWA’s global performance was also highlighted during the meeting. In 2024, DEWA recorded the world’s lowest electricity transmission and distribution network losses at 2%, significantly outperforming the global average of 6%-7%. Water losses were also the lowest globally at 4.5%. The authority achieved a world record in customer service reliability, with customer minutes lost reduced to 0.94 minutes annually — compared to the European Union’s average of 15 minutes.

Al Tayer emphasized DEWA’s integration of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to improve efficiency and sustainability across energy and water services. He reaffirmed DEWA’s commitment to international collaboration in support of global sustainability goals.

The meeting concluded with both DEWA and Azerishiq affirming the importance of global partnerships in accelerating energy transition. Areas of potential cooperation include smart grid development, renewable energy integration, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at supporting clean energy adoption in Azerbaijan.
