To complement the grant, the federal government launched the Canada Greener Homes Loan. Backed by $4.4 billion, this program offers interest-free loans of $5,000 to $40,000, repayable over 10 years, to help homeowners manage the upfront cost of retrofits.
As of mid-2025, there are strong indications that the loan program will stop accepting new applications in November 2025. Given typical application and installation timelines for projects like solar, that deadline is closer than it seems.
These programs have played a significant role in accelerating Canada’s move toward a low-carbon economy. They have made it possible for many homeowners to make meaningful improvements without the financial strain of large upfront costs. But with both incentives winding down, the opportunity to access up to $45,000 in interest-free funding and grants is disappearing.
