The Kowalis Auto Group has finished its solar energy conversion project, which began in 2022, installing more than 700 solar panels on the roofs of each of its three dealerships: Orland Toyota, Lexus of Orland, and Lexus of Merrillville. Together, the 2,200-plus panels cover over 75 percent of available roof space across the group.
This milestone marks a significant step toward the group’s goal of becoming more energy efficient and environmentally responsible. The family-owned business has prioritized sustainability, building on past efforts like upgrading to LED lighting in showrooms and service areas.
Each dealership’s solar array is expected to reduce grid electricity use by about 41 percent. The combined systems at the Orland locations form one of the largest rooftop solar installations in Chicago’s South Suburbs, while the Merrillville array is among the first of its kind in Northwest Indiana.
Overall, the solar panels will generate nearly one million kilowatt-hours annually, equivalent to saving around 17,900 trees each year, making a meaningful impact on energy conservation and environmental preservation.
