Silfab Solar, a leading name in the solar industry known for its innovative and high-performance photovoltaic (PV) modules, has announced the acquisition of EnPV’s technology patent portfolio. This acquisition significantly broadens Silfab’s patent holdings and strengthens its pipeline of advanced technologies aimed at developing the next generation of solar panels manufactured in the United States. The assets acquired include several solar technology patents and an associated trademark.

A key part of this acquisition is the integration of Self-Aligned Back Contact (SABC) technology into Silfab’s existing technology library. SABC is one of the most advanced designs for back-contact solar cells and enables precise alignment and improved electrical performance during the manufacturing of cells and modules. This proprietary technology will help Silfab continue to innovate, especially within its Silfab Elite Series, by optimizing backsheet configurations and enhancing integrated cell architecture.

Paolo Maccario, Silfab President and CEO, stated, “Silfab Solar is leading the way in the integration of innovative solar cells and modules by investing in new technology specifically designed for the U.S market. Acquiring these cutting-edge technology patents and intellectual property will enable us to develop the next generation of solar panels for the Silfab Elite Series and beyond, ensuring we continue to offer our customers high-quality, powerful solar modules manufactured in the U.S. while preserving and protecting strategically important European and American innovation.”

Along with the patents, Silfab will also bring onboard a team of solar experts who originally developed the SABC technology. This team will work with Silfab to further advance cutting-edge photovoltaic solutions. Earlier in 2024, Silfab Solar was awarded a $5 million innovation grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of a larger $20 million project. This project focuses on developing highly efficient U.S.-made back-contact N-type solar cells, with a goal to achieve efficiencies of 26 percent or higher.
