Zelestra, a global, multi-technology, customer-focused renewable energy company, has begun construction on the 242 MWdc Babilonia solar project in Arequipa, Peru. Babilonia is part of the larger La Joya complex, which is planned to reach a total capacity of nearly 700 MWdc and includes Zelestra’s 300 MW San Martín solar project—the largest solar plant in Peru, operational since 2025—along with an additional 125 MW project in advanced development. The Babilonia project will feature the installation of 394,000 bifacial solar panels and is expected to reach commercial operation in the first half of 2027.

The development of Babilonia has been enabled by a long-term power purchase agreement with Celepsa, a leading company in the Peruvian electricity sector. The agreement ensures that the energy generated will supply Celepsa’s regulated, mining, and industrial customers, providing a reliable, competitive, and sustainable electricity supply for key sectors of the Peruvian economy. Eduardo Rivas, CEO of Celepsa, noted that the company’s participation in the project is part of its strategy to secure dependable energy supply for customers while supporting the growth of Peru’s energy sector.

José Luis García Pérez, CEO of Zelestra in Latin America, emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to the region, stating that the Babilonia project demonstrates Zelestra’s focus on developing large-scale, high-performance renewable energy projects that create value for customers, support the energy transition, and contribute to the economic and social development of local communities.

During construction, the project will generate more than 500 direct jobs, with a focus on hiring local labor. Once operational, Babilonia is expected to produce enough clean energy to power approximately 350,000 Peruvian homes, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and strengthening the security of the national electricity system.

Zelestra is a vertically integrated renewable energy company specializing in the development, commercialization, construction, and operation of large-scale projects. The group was recently ranked among the top ten global sellers of clean energy to corporate customers, including in the U.S., by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). Backed by EQT, one of the world’s largest investment funds with €270 billion in assets under management, Zelestra continues to expand its footprint and leadership in delivering sustainable energy solutions.
