Last year, a remote island community in Hawaii asked SEI for help. The Ho’ahu Energy Cooperative on Molokai is transitioning away from diesel generators to an off-grid solar nanogrid, and they needed their people trained to build, operate, and maintain it.
Because of supporters like you, we said yes.
The Johnny Weiss Solar Access for All Initiative was able to provide full scholarships for Molokai residents to complete online training, preparing them to pursue industry credentials. This foundational knowledge launched a local workforce capable of supporting Molokai’s clean energy transition.
That first investment also created momentum. The Cooperative secured additional funding this year for a customized, instructor-led program focused on their actual equipment and the systems being installed on the island. Learn more about the Molokai microgrid.
On the other side of the world, an educational visionary in Kenya is bringing solar education to secondary schools thanks to SEI curriculum and the funds raised for this program in 2025. Solar in the Schools- Kenya Chapter is a partnership with Lnotch Africa STEM Initiative that will reach over 750 students and 20 educators, providing practical experience in renewable energy for a generation of Kenyan solar leaders.
That is the promise of the Johnny Weiss Solar Access for All Initiative: not just hardware, but the knowledge and local ownership Johnny always said were the real path to energy independence.
Your gifts also funded scholarships for individual students around the world who embody that same drive.
