Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) and Finnish renewable energy fund manager Taaleri Energia have inaugurated the 154 MW Čibuk 2 wind farm in Serbia, establishing the largest wind power hub in Serbia and the Western Balkans.

Located in Serbia’s South Banat region, around 40 km from Belgrade, Čibuk 2 is situated alongside the 158 MW Čibuk 1 wind farm. Together, the two projects have a combined installed capacity of 312 MW and can supply clean electricity to approximately 178,800 households.

The combined Čibuk projects represent more than €500 million in foreign direct investment in Serbia’s energy infrastructure.

Čibuk 2 comprises 22 Nordex wind turbines and is expected to generate up to 336,000 MWh of electricity annually, enough to supply around 80,000 homes. The project is also expected to avoid approximately 311,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The wind farm is jointly owned by Masdar and Taaleri Energia on a 50:50 basis and was developed in partnership with New Energy Solutions.

The project was inaugurated at a ceremony in Belgrade attended by Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović, UAE Ambassador to Serbia Ahmed Almenhali, Finland’s Deputy Ambassador to Serbia Elina Ollila, and representatives from Masdar and Taaleri Energia.

Supporting Serbia’s Energy Security

The commissioning of Čibuk 2 is expected to support Serbia’s growing electricity demand by increasing domestic renewable power generation. The project is also intended to reduce the country’s exposure to fuel price volatility and contribute to diversification of its energy mix.

Masdar has a development pipeline of more than 200 MW in Serbia covering solar, wind and battery storage projects. Serbia has plans to add approximately 3.5 GW of new wind and solar capacity by 2030 and targets renewables accounting for 45% of electricity generation by the same year.

Serbia’s Ministry of Mining and Energy stated that the combined 312 MW capacity of Čibuk 1 and Čibuk 2 currently represents around 25% of the country’s combined wind and solar power capacity.

During construction of Čibuk 2, more than 1,000 people were engaged across the workforce, subcontractors and project management teams, with most workers coming from the South Banat region.

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said the completion of Čibuk 2 strengthens the company’s presence in Serbia and provides a platform for further renewable energy development in the region.

Taaleri Energia Managing Director Kai Rintala said the project reflects the company’s long-term commitment to the region and supports its plans to expand its renewable energy portfolio across Eastern Europe.

Masdar currently has more than 65 GW of renewable energy capacity across its global portfolio, spanning solar, onshore and offshore wind, battery storage and hybrid projects. The company has set a target of reaching 100 GW of energy capacity by 2030.
