Saudi Arabia has expanded its renewable energy pipeline to 63.8 GW across 53 projects, reflecting the Kingdom’s accelerating efforts to transform its power sector and increase the share of clean energy in electricity generation.

According to data from the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) through its Saudi Arabia Renewables Tracker, the country’s operational renewable energy capacity has increased 63-fold since 2020 to reach 19.3 GW in 2026. The growth forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 strategy to diversify its energy mix, reduce carbon emissions, and develop sustainable energy infrastructure.

The Kingdom is targeting between 100 GW and 130 GW of renewable generation capacity by the end of the decade. It has also set a long-term objective of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.

Solar power dominates the tracked renewable energy portfolio, accounting for 81% of the total capacity, while wind projects represent the remaining 19%. Around 30% of the tracked capacity is already operational, while 37% is under construction or development. Another 32% is currently in the tendering stage.

Renewable energy projects are being developed across several regions, including Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, Al-Qassim, Aseer, and the Eastern Province, indicating the broad geographical expansion of clean energy infrastructure across the Kingdom.

The projects are also demonstrating competitive generation costs. The levelized cost of energy across the tracked developments ranges from 1.04 cents per kWh at the Shuaibah 1 project to 2.98 cents per kWh at the Layla project. Several solar projects currently under development have recorded average costs ranging between 1.09 cents and 1.36 cents per kWh.

Eight renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 7.7 GW are scheduled for completion in 2026. Six of these projects have already been fully installed. Major solar projects include the 2 GW Haden project in Makkah, the 2 GW Muwayh project, the 1.5 GW Khushaybi project in Al-Qassim, and the 400 MW Tabarjal project in Al-Jouf.

The Kingdom is also expanding wind power capacity. The 600 MW Alghat wind project in Riyadh and the 500 MW Waad Al Shammal wind project in the Northern Borders region are among the projects brought online in 2026.

Two additional solar projects remain under development: the 400 MW Henakiyah 2 project in Madinah and the 300 MW Rabigh 2 project in Makkah. Further tenders and project announcements are expected as Saudi Arabia continues efforts to expand renewable generation and advance its long-term clean energy and sustainability objectives.
