The Indian stock market closed lower on October 12, 2026, as major benchmark indices came under selling pressure. The S&P BSE Sensex declined 0.76% to settle at 71,924.68, while the NIFTY 50 fell 0.90% to close at 22,316.85. Despite the broader market weakness, green energy and renewable energy stocks recorded mixed performance, with select companies attracting buying interest while others faced losses.
Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Ltd emerged as one of the leading gainers in the renewable energy segment. The company’s shares rose approximately 3.73% on the BSE to close at Rs 168.20, reflecting positive investor interest during the session. Amara Raja Energy & Mobility also witnessed strong buying activity, with its shares advancing around 1.80% to reach Rs 734.00 on the BSE.
Adani Green Energy continued to trade in positive territory, gaining more than 1% to reach approximately Rs 1,268.65. JSW Energy also ended the session higher at Rs 467.75 on the BSE. Meanwhile, NTPC Green Energy Ltd gained around 1.61%, with its shares trading at Rs 94.06. These gains indicated that some investors continued to show interest in selected renewable energy and power companies despite the overall market downturn.
However, several companies in the green energy sector faced selling pressure. Insolation Energy declined approximately 1.99% to close at Rs 78.00 on the BSE. EKI Energy Services also recorded a drop of around 3%, making it one of the weaker performers among the companies mentioned during the session. Borosil Renewables fell 0.96% to settle at Rs 426.15.
The broader industrial and energy segments also witnessed declines. Larsen & Toubro shares dropped 1.87% on the BSE to close at Rs 3,629.90, while Reliance Industries slipped 1.01% to finish at Rs 1,159.00. The losses among these major companies added to the cautious market sentiment.
The session reflected a selective investment approach, with market participants favouring certain renewable energy stocks while remaining cautious about others. The contrasting performance highlighted differences in investor sentiment across the sector.
Going forward, investors are likely to monitor broader market trends, economic indicators and company-specific developments to assess the direction of energy and industrial stocks. Although short-term volatility continues to influence trading, the mixed performance of renewable energy companies indicates that investor interest remains uneven across India’s clean energy market.
