Italian long-duration energy storage (LDES) company Energy Dome has opened a manufacturing plant in Piacenza, Italy, as it expands production of its CO2 Battery technology for international projects.

The facility will manufacture key components, including the large domes used in the company’s carbon dioxide-based energy storage systems.

Energy Dome said it has shipped the first dome manufactured entirely in-house to India for the 20 MW/160 MWh Kudgi project with state-owned power company NTPC. Production is underway for the 20 MW/200 MWh Columbia Energy Storage Project in Wisconsin, United States, with Alliant Energy. The next component is destined for a 23 MW/200 MWh project in Rhode, Ireland.

The company invested approximately €2 million ($2.2 million) in the Piacenza site over the past year to upgrade the building, acquire machinery and improve electrical and network infrastructure. It plans to increase total investment to approximately €6.5 million over the next two years, with the goal of tripling production capacity and expanding the local workforce from 30 employees to between 80 and 90 by 2028.

Energy Dome said its technology relies on European manufacturing supply chains, including steel and turbomachinery, rather than supply chains located outside Europe.

The company reports a presence across four continents, with more than 2 GWh of projects operational or under contract, more than 3 GWh of authorized projects and a development pipeline exceeding 30 GWh. Its customers and partners include Google, Engie, Alliant Energy, NTPC, SEC and SRP.

Energy Dome also cited Italy’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan, grid operator Terna’s stated need for 50 GWh of storage by 2030 and the new MACSE storage procurement mechanism as factors supporting demand for energy storage.
