Solar deal handshake energy storage partnership joint venture

Samsung SDI America has signed a 1 GWh supply agreement deal with Houston-based battery developer Alpha Omega Power in a bid to expand its energy storage presence in North America.

The deal is the second of its kind between Alpha Omega and the Michigan-based Samsung subsidiary, officials say. Following an initial contract signed in late 2025, the new agreement triples the total capacity between the two, to 1.5 GWh of storage.

Now, Alpha Omega has plans to deploy Samsung’s energy storage solutions for several utility-scale solar projects, officials say. Aiming for enhanced grid reliability and power demand growth, representatives expect the projects to break ground next year in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) region and Texas’s ERCOT market.

“American-made ESS from Samsung SDI will play an important role in AOP’s continued growth,” says Alpha Omega Power CEO Paul Choi. “This second agreement strengthens our domestic supply chain supporting the next generation of energy infrastructure.”

This deal is the latest in a long line for Samsung SDI, officials says, as it continues to discuss potential future orders with companies around the U.S. As energy storage continues to skyrocket in importance for the American energy grid, the South Korean firm says its technology can help lead that market shift.

As part of its latest agreement with Alpha Omega Power, Samsung SDI will supply its fully integrated Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7 to the Texan company for its large-scale projects. The energy storage system features nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) batteries, and will see full manufacturing at the StarPlus Energy plant in Kokomo, Indiana, a joint venture between Samsung SDI and Detroit auto giant Stellantis.

Deploying future technologies

Samsung representatives say the SBB 1.7 system delivers 17% higher energy density than its predecessor, the SBB 1.5, while also maintaining the same 20-foot footprint. Additionally, the new storage solution incorporates cutting-edge, AI-powered algorithmic technology, Samsung says, and is designed for 25 years of continuous use.

Alongside the upgraded energy density, the SBB 1.7 has tested for standard NFPA 855 and UL 9540 standards for energy storage systems. Samsung engineers have also included the firm’s Enhanced Direct Injection, which injects fire extinguishing agents into battery modules as-needed.

“Alpha Omega Power is one of the fastest growing independent power producers in the country, and the kind of sophisticated operator we want to partner with to tackle grid reliability challenges,” says Fabrice Hudry, president of energy storage systems for Samsung SDI America.

“With our differentiated technology and local production capabilities, we will continue to expand our business foundation and strengthen our position in the North American ESS market.”

Samsung SDI America expects deliveries of the SBB 1.7 systems to commence before the end of 2026.
