Arevon Energy, Inc., a prominent U.S.-based energy developer and operator, has announced the start of commercial operations at the Peregrine Energy Storage Project, a large-scale battery energy storage facility located in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego, California. The project has a capacity of 200 megawatts (MW) and 400 megawatt-hours (MWh), making it Arevon’s fifth operational utility-scale energy storage project in California.

Developed, owned, and operated by Arevon, the $300 million Peregrine facility features state-of-the-art lithium iron phosphate batteries, chosen for their strong safety profile. During peak construction, the project supported over 90 full-time equivalent jobs and is projected to contribute more than $28 million in property tax revenues over its lifetime, benefiting the local community economically.

Energy storage systems like Peregrine play a crucial role in maintaining grid reliability by storing electricity during times of low demand and releasing it during peak usage. This capability reduces the risk of power shortages such as brownouts and blackouts, especially during high-demand periods. When fully charged, the Peregrine facility can supply electricity to up to 200,000 homes for two hours each day.

Projects like Peregrine also support the integration of additional renewable energy sources by helping balance supply and demand on the grid. By storing excess solar or wind power generated during off-peak hours, the system ensures that clean energy can be used when it is needed most, ultimately enhancing grid efficiency and helping stabilize electricity prices.
