The Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC) has announced the approved power tariffs for Assam’s key utility companies, confirming that there will be no increase in electricity rates for the financial year 2026–27. According to a press release issued on March 6, 2026, the revised tariffs will come into effect from April 1, 2026, offering relief to consumers across the state.

The decision follows a detailed regulatory process that began in November 2025, when major utilities—Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited, Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited, State Load Despatch Centre, and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited—submitted petitions for truing up their past financials and revising revenue requirements for the upcoming year. The Commission admitted these petitions in December 2025 and subsequently invited public feedback through January 2026. A public hearing was held on February 4, 2026, where multiple stakeholders presented their views, followed by further discussions with the State Advisory Committee.

For APDCL, the state’s primary distribution company, AERC identified a modest revenue surplus of ₹5.41 crore for FY 2026–27. However, this surplus translated into a very minor tariff reduction of just 0.4 paise per unit. Considering the negligible impact, the Commission decided to retain the existing tariff structure across all consumer categories, keeping rates unchanged from the previous financial year. The approved Average Cost of Supply (ACOS) stands at ₹9.06 per kWh.

Consumers in Assam will continue to benefit from government-backed subsidies. The state government has confirmed that existing subsidy schemes will remain in place for the upcoming financial year. Under the “Jeevan Dhara” category, consumers will continue to receive electricity at a significantly reduced effective rate of ₹3.35 per kWh compared to the actual cost of ₹5.34 per kWh. Similarly, domestic consumers consuming up to 120 units will pay a subsidized tariff of ₹4.25 per unit, ensuring affordability for lower-income households.

Industrial and sector-specific tariffs have also been kept stable. The generation tariff for APGCL has been approved at ₹6.29 per kWh, while AEGCL’s transmission charges remain at ₹0.45 per kWh. The Commission has also continued the Time of Day (ToD) tariff structure, encouraging efficient electricity usage by offering lower rates during solar hours (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) and higher charges during peak evening hours (5:00 PM to 10:00 PM).

In line with the growing focus on clean mobility, tariffs for electric vehicle charging stations have been maintained at ₹8.72 per kWh for Low Tension connections and ₹8.35 per kWh for High Tension connections. Additionally, the Green Energy Tariff remains unchanged at ₹1.00 per kWh for consumers opting to support renewable energy consumption.

The Commission emphasized that its decision was made after carefully balancing the financial sustainability of power utilities with the need to protect consumer interests, ensuring stability in electricity pricing across Assam.
