Canadian Solar TOPCon 3.0 module

Kitchener, Ontario-based solar manufacturing firm Canadian Solar Inc. has announced the launch of its new TOPCon 3.0 module.

Promising up to 670 watt-peak and a conversion efficiency of up to 24.8%, the TOPCon 3.0 module is scheduled for global shipment by August 2026. According to Canadian Solar representatives, the new module also delivers higher energy yield than average, as well as lower levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) numbers.

“With the launch of our TOPCon 3.0 module, we continue to advance high-efficiency PV technology,” says Dr. Shawn Qu, executive chairmand and chief technology officer of Canadian Solar, “delivering up to 1.6% higher energy yield and up to 1.4% lower LCOE, translating into stronger lifecycle value and more predictable long-term returns for our global partners.”

According to the Canadian Solar website, the product has 1.6% higher yield than previous generations of TOPCon modules. Additionally, the new panel offers up to 90& bifaciality, producing more power from the back side of the module than ever before. The product is especially useful in hot climate scenarios, thanks to its lower temperature coefficient of -0.26% per degree Celsius.

Advancing solar module technology

The new module boasts advanced technology, as well as enhanced reliability and efficiency to push the solar module world forward, Canadian Solar says.

The new solar panel offers multi-cut cells and a cell overlap design, providing a higher active surface area across the panel itself. Along with that active area, the panel provides less energy losses and a lower risk of hotspot and other thermal issues.

“Together, these advanced cell and module technologies deliver high reliability and reduce degradation to ≤1% in the first year and 0.35% annually thereafter, ensuring over 88.85% output after 30 years,” the company says. “For demanding conditions such as glare-sensitive, high-load, corrosive, and dusty environments, the TOPCon 3.0 module portfolio can be equipped with anti-glare glass, IoT (Internet of Things)-enabled junction box, and steel, composite, or anti-dust frames, enhancing PV system safety and visibility.”

The new TOPCon 3.0 high-efficiency solar panel will premiere at this year’s Intersolar Europe trade show, Canadian Solar officials say. Taking place in Munich, Germany, the show will run from June 23 to 25.
