Delhi is witnessing a sharp rise in electricity consumption as extreme heatwave conditions continue to push temperatures higher across the city. The capital recently recorded a peak power demand of over 8,400 MW, reflecting the growing dependence on cooling systems such as air conditioners, coolers, and fans during the summer season. The increasing demand has put pressure on the power distribution network, making efficient planning and supply management essential to avoid outages and maintain uninterrupted electricity services for residents and businesses.

Power utilities in the city have strengthened their preparedness by arranging additional electricity supply through multiple sources and adopting advanced forecasting systems to predict consumption patterns during peak hours. Along with conventional power, a significant share of electricity is now being sourced from renewable energy, including solar, hydro, wind, rooftop solar installations, waste-to-energy projects, and battery energy storage systems. This shift towards cleaner energy sources is helping reduce dependence on traditional fuels while supporting a stable electricity supply during high-demand periods.

Authorities have also introduced consumer-focused energy management programs aimed at reducing unnecessary electricity usage during peak hours. These initiatives encourage households and commercial users to manage energy consumption more responsibly, helping improve grid stability and overall efficiency. Over the years, such efforts have contributed to large-scale energy savings and reduced stress on the distribution system.

The spokesperson from Tata Power-DDL stated, “As Delhi reeled under an intense heatwave and the city’s power demand touched *8,439* MW, Tata Power-DDL successfully met its peak demand of *2,416 MW*, the highest so far this season, without any network constraint or power disruption.

Tata Power-DDL is currently sourcing nearly 1,115 MW of green power as part of its expanding renewable energy portfolio, including around 400 MW of solar energy, 477 MW of hydro power, 50 MW of wind energy, 152 MW through rooftop solar installations, and 21 MW from waste-to-energy plants, along with 15 MW supported through Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Additionally, the company has planned procurement of up to 550 MW through short-term bilateral arrangements to effectively manage peak summer demand.

To manage energy consumption more efficiently, Tata Power-DDL has implemented a Behavioral Demand Response Program. The program has enrolled over 1.5 lakh consumers and achieved cumulative load curtailment of more than 1,400 MW in the last five years, resulting in energy savings exceeding 27 lakh units, while promoting grid stability and sustainable energy consumption.

This was made possible through robust planning and strategic measures, including bilateral tie-ups, reserve shutdown arrangements, and participation in the power exchange market, enabling the company to reliably meet rising demand. To further strengthen preparedness, Tata Power-DDL has also arranged short-term power procurement to effectively manage any unforeseen demand spikes.

Backed by advanced load forecasting and predictive analytics, the company continues to ensure an uninterrupted and reliable power supply to consumers, even during extreme weather conditions. We are fully geared to seamlessly meet the rising power demand during the intense heatwave conditions and the warmer days ahead.”

Advanced technologies such as predictive analytics, real-time monitoring, and smart load management are also playing an important role in ensuring a reliable electricity supply during extreme weather conditions. With summer temperatures expected to remain high in the coming weeks, power agencies are continuing to monitor demand closely and maintain sufficient backup arrangements to handle any sudden surge in electricity consumption across Delhi.
