Can you get solar installed for free? What subsidy is available? And how do you apply? Here’s a simple guide.

Delhi’s rooftop solar scheme can help you turn your roof into a source of electricity for your home. Some eligible households can get a solar system installed free of cost. Others can receive government subsidies to reduce what they pay.
The first step is to check your electricity consumption.
Can I get solar installed for free?
If your average monthly electricity consumption was up to 400 units during April 2025–March 2026, you may qualify for a free 2 kW or 3 kW rooftop solar system.
Your eligibility will be checked using your electricity connection details. A site visit will also confirm whether your roof is suitable for installation.
What if I use more than 400 units a month?
You can still apply for solar and receive financial support.
Eligible homeowners can get:
- Central government subsidy: up to ₹78,000
- Delhi government subsidy: up to ₹78,000
That means total support of up to ₹1.56 lac. You pay the remaining system cost after the applicable subsidies. The actual subsidy depends on the system capacity, scheme rules and the cost determined through the government tender.
Who will install the solar system?
For installations through the government scheme, the government selects solar companies through a tender.
You do not need to take part in the tender. You submit your application and consent. The selected company then visits your home, checks your roof and arranges installation if your property qualifies.
How do I apply?
Visit the official Delhi Solar Portal and keep these ready:
- Your latest electricity bill, showing your CA or Consumer Account number
- Your mobile phone for OTP verification
- Your home and rooftop details
Follow the application steps, review the consent terms and submit the form. Save your application reference number.
Applying does not mean installation is immediately confirmed. Your eligibility and rooftop suitability must be checked first.
What should I ask when the company visits?
Use the site visit to understand how solar will fit into your home. Five simple questions can help:
- Where will the panels go, and how much terrace space will they occupy?
- Will I still have access to my water tank and other parts of the roof?
- How will the panels be fixed securely without causing roof leakage?
- Which panels and inverter will be installed?
- Who will handle maintenance and service, and what is covered?
Ask for the equipment details, installation scope and service terms in writing.
Can I choose my own solar company?
Under the government-led scheme, installation is carried out by a company selected through the tender.
You can also explore a direct installation through an empanelled solar vendor. Before booking, confirm the subsidy available for your installation and how the payment process will work.
