Basque engineering company Lointek has delivered its latest long-duration energy storage project for UK-based Highview Power, marking a key milestone in the deployment of liquid air energy storage (LAES) technology.

The project, developed in partnership with Spanish engineering company TSK, is considered the largest facility of its kind in the United Kingdom. It features a storage capacity of 300 MWh and a power output of 50 MW, enabling up to six hours of continuous energy discharge. Commercial operation is scheduled for 2027, with a design lifetime exceeding 50 years.

Lointek is responsible for the design, manufacture, and supply of the plant’s thermal systems, which are central to the LAES process. The technology stores energy by using surplus renewable electricity to cool air to cryogenic temperatures until it liquefies. When electricity is required, the liquid air is warmed and expands back into gas, driving turbines to generate power.

The system also integrates thermal storage using molten salt to improve round-trip efficiency and operational flexibility.

Highview Power previously announced plans to develop more than 4 GWh of LAES-based storage projects across the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
