NamPower has commenced construction of the 100 MW Sores |Gaib Power Station, the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) facility in Namibia to date. A media groundbreaking ceremony was held to mark the official start of the project, located 33 kilometers northwest of Rosh Pinah.
Named “Sores |Gaib,” meaning “Power of the Sun” in the Khoekhoegowab language, the power station is expected to significantly contribute to Namibia’s energy mix by reducing dependence on imported electricity and fossil fuels. Once operational, the facility will play a central role in enhancing the country’s energy independence, fostering economic growth, and advancing climate resilience.
NamPower has committed a total investment of N$1.6 billion to the project. The majority of the funding—approximately N$1.3 billion—has been secured through a loan from German development bank KfW, under an intergovernmental agreement between the Government of Namibia and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. The remaining amount will be financed from NamPower’s internal reserves.
During the groundbreaking event, NamPower Managing Director Kahenge Haulofu emphasized the long-term significance of the project in the nation’s clean energy transition.
“Our country has abundant sun and we as a nation are ready to seize the opportunities that renewable energy offers. The 100 MW Sores |Gaib Power Station is a critical step in fulfilling that potential,” Haulofu stated.
The construction phase is expected to create over 300 direct jobs, with an emphasis on employing local labor to promote skills development and socio-economic impact in the surrounding region. The project’s Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor has committed to allocating 25% of the contract value—amounting to N$356 million—toward local content, further underscoring NamPower’s implementation strategy focused on community participation.
In addition to its economic and energy contributions, the project includes a comprehensive Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP). This framework ensures biodiversity protection and responsible community engagement, reinforcing NamPower’s dedication to environmental stewardship.
Set for commercial operation by June 2026, the Sores |Gaib Power Station represents a major stride toward fulfilling NamPower’s evolving mandate of generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity in a reliable, affordable, and sustainable manner. The project also aligns with Namibia’s broader national objectives to meet climate targets and accelerate its shift to renewable energy sources.
