NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited, is set to develop a major renewable energy project in Uttar Pradesh. The company has announced plans to establish a 250 MW solar power project on vacant defence land in Sitapur district. The development was disclosed through a regulatory filing submitted to the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and BSE Limited on June 9, 2026.

The proposed project will include a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which is expected to enhance the reliability and stability of the power supply. By integrating battery storage with solar generation, the project aims to ensure a continuous and dependable supply of clean electricity to defence establishments in the state.

According to the company, this will be the first large-scale solar project integrated with a BESS specifically designed to support the energy security requirements of defence infrastructure. The initiative reflects the growing focus on clean energy adoption within critical government and strategic sectors.

The project has received approval from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Once commissioned, the electricity generated from the solar plant will be supplied directly to various defence establishments across Uttar Pradesh. The move is expected to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources while supporting the country’s sustainability goals.
