SAMSUNG SDI has signed a 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) energy storage system (ESS) supply agreement with Alpha Omega Power (AOP), a US-based utility-scale battery storage developer and independent power producer. The agreement was announced by SAMSUNG SDI, which will supply the systems through its Michigan-based subsidiary, SAMSUNG SDI America (SDIA). Including an initial contract signed late last year, the two agreements bring the total contracted supply to 1.5 GWh.

Alpha Omega Power plans to deploy the battery storage systems in large-scale power projects designed to support grid reliability and meet growing electricity demand across the United States. Construction of the projects is scheduled to begin next year in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) power markets.

Under the latest agreement, SAMSUNG SDI will supply its Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7, an integrated energy storage solution featuring nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) battery technology. All battery cells and modules for the contracted systems will be manufactured at the StarPlus Energy (SPE) facility in Kokomo, Indiana. Deliveries are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

The SBB 1.7 system uses high-nickel NCA chemistry to improve energy density and storage performance. According to the company, the system provides 17% higher energy density than its predecessor, SBB 1.5, while maintaining the same 20-foot footprint. This design allows the system to deliver greater storage capacity without increasing its physical dimensions.

The solution also incorporates artificial intelligence-powered algorithms designed to detect anomalies at an early stage and predict battery life. SAMSUNG SDI has designed the system for 25 years of continuous use, highlighting its focus on durability and long-term performance in utility-scale energy storage applications.

Safety is another key feature of the SBB 1.7. The system has obtained certifications and meets safety standards, including NFPA 855, which covers the installation of stationary energy storage systems, and UL 9540, a safety standard for energy storage systems. It also incorporates the company’s proprietary Enhanced Direct Injection (EDI) technology, which delivers fire-extinguishing agents directly into individual battery modules to strengthen fire protection.

SAMSUNG SDI said it has secured several ESS supply agreements with US energy companies this year and is in discussions with other local customers. The company expects additional orders as demand for large-scale battery storage continues to develop.

Industry analysts have attributed the company’s recent contract wins partly to its prismatic battery technology, known as PrismStack. SAMSUNG SDI stated that it is currently the only non-Chinese supplier of prismatic ESS batteries in North America, with its technology offering durability and fire-safety advantages compared with pouch-type batteries.

Alpha Omega Power CEO Paul Choi said the agreement would support the company’s growth and strengthen the domestic supply chain for future energy infrastructure. Fabrice Hudry, President of the ESS division at SAMSUNG SDI America, said the partnership would help address grid reliability challenges and expand the company’s presence in the North American energy storage market.
