The UK Government has announced a £200 million investment through Great British Energy to install solar panels across hundreds of schools and hospitals. This initiative is seen as an important step toward reducing carbon emissions and lowering energy costs in the public sector. While the funding focuses on installing solar systems, Rayotec Limited, a leading UK specialist in solar energy and renewable heating, emphasizes that long-term maintenance is just as important as installation.

Solar panels are designed to provide clean energy for many years, but their performance depends on proper monitoring, servicing, and upkeep. Without regular maintenance, electrical faults, component issues, or inverter failures can reduce efficiency or even stop systems from working. For schools and hospitals operating on tight budgets, failing to maintain solar systems could mean losing the energy and cost savings they were intended to deliver.

Rayotec Limited points out that many organizations view solar as a “fit and forget” technology, prioritizing installation over ongoing care. Reza Sabba, Director at Rayotec, explains that professional maintenance contracts are crucial to avoid reduced system performance, costly repairs, and potential safety risks. Facilities managers and estate directors need to include solar maintenance in their long-term energy plans from the start, rather than waiting for problems to occur.

With over 30 years of experience, Rayotec has worked with schools, hospitals, local authorities, housing associations, and large public estates, providing testing and servicing to keep systems running at peak efficiency, clear reporting tailored for facilities teams, and specialist support to meet health and safety standards.

As the education and healthcare sectors adopt solar energy on a larger scale, Rayotec urges decision-makers to act now to protect these investments. According to Reza Sabba, “This £200 million investment is only the beginning. To ensure solar becomes a reliable part of the public sector’s net zero journey, maintenance cannot be optional. Proper upkeep will safeguard energy savings and help these systems deliver clean power for decades to come.”
