Uttar Pradesh is making significant progress toward becoming a major renewable energy hub with an investment of around ₹5,400 crore in the Green Energy Corridor-II project. The ambitious initiative aims to strengthen the state’s power transmission infrastructure and support its target of achieving 22,000 MW of solar power capacity in the coming years.

The project is focused on creating a dedicated transmission network that will enable the smooth evacuation and distribution of renewable energy generated across the state. A major share of this development is centered on the Bundelkhand region, which has emerged as Uttar Pradesh’s most promising solar energy zone. Districts such as Jhansi, Jalaun, and Lalitpur have vast solar power potential, making them ideal locations for large-scale solar projects.

However, generating renewable energy alone is not sufficient. Efficient transmission infrastructure is essential to transport electricity from solar-rich regions to areas where demand is high. The Green Energy Corridor-II project is designed to address this challenge by connecting solar generation sites in Bundelkhand with consumers across the state, including industrial and urban centers in western Uttar Pradesh.

The project will be financed through a combination of government grants, equity participation from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), and loans from multilateral financial institutions. This financial structure is expected to ensure timely execution of the transmission network while supporting the state’s long-term clean energy goals.

Apart from utility-scale solar development, Uttar Pradesh is also witnessing rapid growth in rooftop solar adoption. The state has already achieved approximately 5.5 lakh rooftop solar installations, contributing around 1,844 MW of installed capacity. This reflects increasing consumer interest in clean and affordable energy solutions.

Private sector participation is playing an important role in accelerating this transition. Tata Power, one of the leading companies in the rooftop solar segment, is expanding its presence in the state. According to Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Praveer Sinha, the company plans to add another 300,000 rooftop solar installations across Uttar Pradesh over the next three years. These installations are expected to include battery storage solutions, helping consumers maximize solar power usage while supporting the growing demand created by electric vehicles.

Industry experts believe that the Green Energy Corridor-II project will serve as a catalyst for broader economic and industrial development. Improved transmission infrastructure will not only facilitate renewable energy integration but also attract investments in battery energy storage systems, solar manufacturing, and other green industries. With large-scale investments in transmission networks and growing adoption of rooftop solar systems, Uttar Pradesh is steadily strengthening its renewable energy ecosystem. The combined efforts of the government and private sector are expected to enhance energy security, promote sustainable development, and position the state as a leading contributor to India’s clean energy transition.
