Energy infrastructure firm Ameresco has finished its latest project, installing both solar and battery storage at the Roseburg Urban Sanitary Authority (RUSA)’s main office in Roseburg, Oregon.
Ameresco and RUSA officials cut the ribbon on the $1 million project Oct. 13, according to representatives. The project includes a 39.4 kWdc solar system, which officials estimate will generate about 51.6 MWh every year. That amount of energy is enough to offset 100% of the electricity used at RUSA’s main office, with power to spare for battery storage.
“Operating a wastewater treatment facility requires substantial energy consumption, which is why RUSA’s initiative and others like it are so important to build a more efficient energy future,” says Louis Maltezos, co-president of Ameresco. “By working together, we’re showing how public organizations can adopt forward-looking strategies that cut emissions, lower costs, and strengthen the quality of life for the communities they serve.”
The solar asset pairs with an 184 kWh Ameresco battery storage system, which the company adds will ensure both administrative and operational function in the event of a grid-related emergency.
Alongside enhancing RUSA’s energy generation levels and electrical reliability, the wastewater firm’s solar and storage initiative will have a role in strengthening the Oregon economy. Ameresco says the project will generate employment opportunities and “actively engage businesses from underrepresented communities.”
The next phase
This particular site is just the beginning, Ameresco adds, as the firm has unveiled plans for a “multi-phase transformative energy program” for RUSA’s key facilities.
Ameresco representatives say upcoming projects include a ground-mounted solar installation at RUSA’s wastewater treatment plant, and a floating solar site at its natural treatment system building. Combined, the three projects will over 1.3 MW to the Oregonian company.
“Partnering with Ameresco allows us to modernize our facilities, safeguarding the long-term well-being of our community as a result,” says Jim Baird, general manager of RUSA. “Through smarter energy use and resilient infrastructure investments, we’re advancing reliable wastewater management while ensuring continued service for our customers in both everyday operations and critical situations.
RUSA’s main office project has already gained recognition around the area, the companies say. The site recently took home two honors at the 2026 Best of the Best Awards from the Oregon Association of Clean Water Agencies, as well as the 2026 Excellence in Resource Recovery & Sustainability Award from the Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association.
