Red Sea Global (RSG), the developer of Saudi Arabia’s regenerative tourism destinations The Red Sea and AMAALA, has received independent third-party verification from DNV confirming that its renewable energy and low-carbon operations avoided 117,879 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) emissions during 2024.

According to the verification, the avoided emissions represent greenhouse gases that would have otherwise been generated through conventional energy production and transportation systems. The emissions savings are equivalent to removing nearly 27,500 passenger vehicles from the road for one year or eliminating the annual electricity consumption of approximately 24,500 households.

The verified results underscore the environmental impact of RSG’s sustainability-focused development model, which integrates renewable energy and low-carbon infrastructure from the early stages of project planning and construction.

Commenting on the achievement, Raed Albasseet, Group Chief Environment and Sustainability Officer at Red Sea Global, said the results demonstrate the significant emissions reductions that can be achieved when sustainability is embedded into destination development from the outset. He added that the environmental benefits are expected to grow further as the destinations continue to expand.

A major contributor to the emissions reductions was The Red Sea destination’s renewable energy infrastructure. The destination operates on 100% renewable electricity generated through a network of more than 760,000 solar panels supported by a large-scale battery energy storage system, enabling continuous clean power supply throughout the day and night.

RSG has also expanded the deployment of electric mobility solutions across its destinations. The company currently operates a growing fleet of electric vehicles and buses supported by 150 charging stations powered entirely by renewable energy.

In the aviation sector, Red Sea International Airport has introduced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Lower-Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF) for seaplane operations. The company is also collaborating with airline partners to increase the availability of SAF for incoming commercial flights.

These initiatives form part of RSG’s broader sustainability strategy and support its target of achieving net-zero emissions across Scope 1 and Scope 2 operations by 2030.

The verified emissions reductions also contribute to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives and align with the Kingdom’s Circular Carbon Economy Framework, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. Through the integration of renewable energy, low-carbon transportation, and sustainable tourism infrastructure, Red Sea Global continues to advance its vision of delivering regenerative tourism while generating measurable climate benefits.
